How to stop procrastination

So, You all know what I am talking about, we all have been there where we think of doing something but we don’t necessarily do it, Got you, I know what you guys are thinking, I know that some random thoughts just popped into your head and you all are thinking what this guy is talking about, you know that instant idea that pops in your mind regarding doing some task, like Cooking, washing dish, doing homework, preparing for the exam, etc. did you understand what I am talking about? If Not- this will clarify for you, think of that moment when you were thinking of cooking food then suddenly you decide to just order a pizza because you just felt like ‘I am not going to cook now’ well that’s what I am talking about, that’s what we call a “Procrastination.” It is the most happening thing in almost everyone’s life, In some peoples case it happens more than others, So today in this ‘How To Stop Procrastination’ blog we are gonna talk about why procrastination happens, techniques which you can use to adapt the new changes, and most importantly how to lead your life towards positivity & more fulfilling direction.

What’s the reason behind procrastination:-  The reason behind people’s procrastination has not understood that well. Some researchers have viewed procrastination primarily as a failure of self-regulation. Still, some say there is a science to it; researchers say, and I quote, “Procrastination boils down to a battle between the limbic system and the prefrontal cortex. The limbic system is a set of brain structures containing the pleasure center, while the prefrontal cortex controls planning and decision making. The prefrontal cortex is less developed and thus weaker, so oftentimes the limbic system wins out, leading to procrastination,” as published in the UPMC Health Beat Website.

Some people often suggest it usually happens when people fear or dread, or have anxiety about, the important task awaiting them. To avoid this negative feeling, people procrastinate — they open up a video game or Instagram instead. That makes them feel better temporarily. Procrastination is a strong and mysterious force that keeps anyone from completing the most urgent and necessary tasks in their lives.

Techniques for How to stop procrastination:-

Don’t let procrastination take over your life. Here are some steps on how to stop procrastinating. These steps will definitely help you in taking your life into a better & more positive direction.

Pomodoro Technique- The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The technique uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. Each interval is known as a Pomodoro, from the Italian word for ‘tomato’, as published on Wikipedia.

I came to know about this technique when I was doing a Personal Development Course on Coursera, it was insightful, and it did help me out. You people should really check it out. The title of the course was “Mindshift: Break Through Obstacles to Learning and Discover Your Hidden Potential.”

Coming back to the Pomodoro technique, There are six steps in the original technique:

  1. Decide on the task to be done.
  2. Set the Pomodoro timer (traditionally to 25 minutes).
  3. Work on the task.
  4. End work when the timer rings and put a checkmark on a piece of paper.
  5. If you have fewer than four checkmarks, take a short break (3–5 minutes), then go to step 2.
  6. After four pomodoros, take a more extended break (15–30 minutes), reset your checkmark count to zero, then go to step 1.

Note:- During the task, if something pops up in your head, acknowledge it, then let go of it. Also please don’t just give up after trying a couple of times, try harder.

Hang out with People Who Inspire You to Take Action:- I’m pretty sure if you spend just 10 minutes talking to Elon Musk or Bill Gates, you’ll be more inspired to act than if you spent the 10 minutes doing useless things. The people we are with influence our behaviors very much, but it’s a known fact. Identify the people, companions, or colleagues who inspire you to do something rather than just sitting on the couch. When you hang out with hard workers more often. Soon you will inculcate their drive and spirit too.

Fact check:

I have never heard anyone procrastinate their way to success before, and it will remain same in the future because there is no shortcut. Whatever it is you are procrastinating on, if you want to accomplish it, you need to get a good grip on yourself and do it.
